<h3><strong>Lesson &amp; Reflection</strong></h3>
<p>Every human being longs to be seen, appreciated, and affirmed. But in today’s world, especially through social media, this natural desire often becomes a craving for public approval. We begin to measure our worth through followers, likes, comments, and applause. But the Quran warns us: if we act for worldly attention, we may receive it, but we stand to lose something far greater. Being applauded by people is not necessarily an indication of acceptance by our Creator. And it is His acceptance that truly matters.</p>
<p>Surah Al-Insan (76:8–11) describes the righteous who are rewarded not for public praise, but for sincere service, those who give without seeking thanks or recognition. They are those who feed and treat the poor, orphans, and captives, doing so only for the sake of Allah, seeking neither reward nor thanks from the beneficiaries. This mindset shows how a believer's motive in giving charity or doing any righteous act is rooted in a deep consciousness of Allah and purely with Allah in mind. They realize that ultimately the reward of their sincerity will mean that Allah will deliver them from the horror of that Day and grant them radiance and joy due to their sincerity. They made their transaction with Allah before they did with people.</p>
<p>Many may be motivated by more likes, popularity, or something similar. But the question that we ought to ask ourselves is: <em>Is it really worth it?</em> <em>To gain the temporary, illusory pleasure of the world and lose a more genuine, permanent one in the hereafter?</em></p>
<p>Similarly, verse (98:5) reminds us: your worth is not in the eyes of people but in your sincerity before Allah. Your worth has already been defined and declared by Allah when He said that He created man in the best form (95:4). Seek His acceptance alone, for true devotion is pure, upright, and free from the need for validation from people.</p>
<p>The validation of others is fleeting; it rises and falls with trends, opinions, and emotions. But the validation of Allah is eternal. He sees the hidden, the unnoticed, and the unrewarded. And He alone can reward in this world <em>and</em> in the next.</p>
<p><strong>If your value depends on how others see you, you will always feel vulnerable. But if it rests in how Allah sees you, you will be unshakeable</strong>. You will not be deterred from your purpose in this world, and you will develop an attentiveness for every action you engage with, knowing full well that Allah is the All-Watchful, and He is appreciative of your righteous actions.</p>

<p>“Whoever seeks Allah's pleasure by the people's wrath, Allah will suffice him from the people. And whoever seeks the people's pleasure by Allah's wrath, Allah will entrust him to the people.”

The Urge to Be Seen

<h3><strong>Lesson &amp; Reflection</strong></h3>
<p>One of the most serious spiritual diseases warned about in Islam is <strong>riya</strong>: doing good deeds not for Allah, but to be seen by people. Social media makes this danger even more subtle: a photo of charity work, a perfectly curated religious reminder, a caption about our intentions – all of it can be manipulated for attention under the guise of sincerity. When we are driven primarily by the approval of others, not only does it spoil our motives, but it also drains the barakah (divine blessings) from the work we invest in.</p>
<p>In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:264), Allah describes a person who gives charity only to be seen and admired. Though the act may appear noble to the public eye, it’s as worthless as seeds on a rock. The outward action is covered in thin sincerity, but rain (a test or scrutiny) washes it away, exposing emptiness underneath. While we cannot judge the intentions of others, we are accountable for our own. When we seek value and worth in Allah and not people, we continuously scrutinize our intentions, focusing on ourselves and remaining unconcerned about people’s views of us. When we divert all our attention to self-improvement and self-scrutiny, we have no time left to worry about others.</p>
<p>Surah An-Nisa (4:142) reinforces this idea by mentioning that those who do good only to be seen by others and remember Allah very little are <strong>not</strong> among the truly faithful. This isn’t about <em>not sharing good deeds;</em> it’s about <em>why</em> we share. If it’s to gain hearts instead of gaining Allah’s approval, we may lose both.</p>
<p>Riya is dangerous because it looks religious outwardly but poisons the heart inwardly. It changes worship into performance and sincerity into self-promotion. The only cure is to be honest with ourselves and to remember that Allah sees what no one else does.</p>
<h3><strong>Hadith</strong></h3>
<p>The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:</p>
<p>“The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk (polytheism), showing off (of good deeds).”

<p>In this hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) equates Riya (showing off) to a minor form of shirk, highlighting the danger that it poses and the seriousness with which we should guard ourselves from it. The common thread between major shirk (associating an equal with Allah) and this minor shirk (showing off) is that whilst a believer will never offer any rituals or acts of worship to false gods, they may inadvertently seek the pleasure of others by doing a righteous act with a misplaced intention, where such an intention should be only done for Allah’s sake.</p>

<li><strong>Do a Deed in Complete Secrecy</strong>: Today, do one small act of worship, prayer, or charity, or dhikr, that no one will see, hear about, or praise. Do it only for Allah, and protect it like a treasure.</li>

The Danger of Showing Off (Riya) in Islam

<p>Sincerity (<em>ikhlas</em>) is the soul of every act of worship. Without it, even our best deeds are hollow. The Quran reminds us that our ultimate command is <strong>not just to <em>do</em> but to <em>do sincerely for Allah</em> alone</strong>. Whether we pray, post, speak, write, or give, Allah knows the reason behind every act.</p>
<p>Many of Allah’s most beloved servants are unknown to the world. They may not have public platforms or large audiences, but their quiet sincerity is more beloved to Allah than fame in this world. True da’wah is not measured by followers, but by faithfulness.</p>
<p>We often equate outward religiosity with inner sincerity, yet Allah reminds us that He looks not at our appearance but at our hearts and actions. Some of the most powerful advocates for Islam are those who live silently and sincerely: the colleague who prays discreetly yet works with excellence, the student who remains honest under pressure, the parent who raises children upon faith with love and humility.</p>
<p>In Allah’s sight, such people are among those whom Allah loves for their hidden sincerity, people whose sincerity protects the faith far more than public debate ever could.</p>
<p>In Surah Al-Zumar (39:11), Allah makes it clear: sincerity in worship is not optional; it’s the foundation of true religion. In Surah Al-An’am (6:162), the Prophet (peace be upon him) is taught to declare that everything he does – <em>his prayer, sacrifice, life, and death –</em> is for Allah alone. That’s not just a statement; it’s a worldview and a lifetime commitment.</p>
<p>When we act with ikhlas (sincerity), we do not worry about who notices, praises, or approves. Criticism does not shake us, nor does silence discourage us. Appearances and flattery do not mislead us. Our goal is not the approval of people but the pleasure of Allah, and He never overlooks a single sincere deed, even if the entire world remains unaware of it. Ikhlas truly liberates the heart. You do not need to perform, nor seek applause. You only need to be genuine before Allah.</p>
<p>Scholars explain that ikhlas spans two dimensions. The first relates to an isolated act, like prayer, requiring intention (niyyah) at the outset for its validity. The second pertains to ongoing endeavors, such as pursuing knowledge or completing a project. This kind demands not only an earnest start but continual renewal, safeguarding sincerity throughout the course.</p>
<p>The great Imam Sufyan al-Thawri offers a deeply honest reflection:</p>
<p><strong>مَا عَالَجْتُ شَيْئًا أَشَدَّ عَلَيَّ مِنْ نِيَّتِي، إِنَّهَا تَتَقَلَّبُ عَلَيَّ</strong></p>
<p>“I have never struggled with anything more difficult than my intention, for it keeps changing on me.”</p>
<p>His words remind us that ikhlas is not a one-time achievement but a lifelong struggle. Even the most devout hearts are tested by shifting motives and the subtle temptations of the ego. For this reason, scholars mention five powerful ways to cultivate and preserve sincerity:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Begin every act with the intention of ikhlas.</strong> Before praying, teaching, giving charity, or even speaking, pause and renew the purpose: <em>“I do this for Allah alone.”</em></li>
<li><strong>Continually check your intention along the way.</strong> Just as a traveler checks his map to ensure he is on the right path, the believer revisits his heart to ensure sincerity remains intact.</li>
<li><strong>Make abundant dua for sincerity.</strong> The Prophet (peace be upon him) would supplicate:

<li><strong>Match your private deeds with your public deeds.</strong> If you recite the Quran beautifully in front of others, strive to recite even more beautifully when alone.</li>
<li><strong>Maintain equal excitement for private and public worship.</strong> The heart that thrills in the privacy of tahajjud (night prayer) is more secure than the one that glows only under the eyes of people.</li>
</ol>
<p>By holding to these five principles, the believer trains his heart to be genuine, hidden from the traps of pride and showing off. Ikhlas then becomes a shield, protecting every act so it ascends to Allah pure and weighty on the scale.</p>

<p>It was narrated that Abu 'Umamah Al-Bahili said:</p>
<p>&quot;A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: 'What do you think of a man who fights seeking reward and fame – what will he have?' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'He will not have anything.' He repeated it three times, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: 'He will not have anything.' Then he said: 'Allah does not accept any deed, except that which is purely for Him, and seeking His Face.'</p>

<p>The constant desire to be seen, validated, or praised by people can leave you feeling drained and unsure of your worth. The Quran, however, offers a powerful shift: <em>being seen by Allah is enough</em>. It’s not just consolation; it’s clarity. It frees us from feeling insecure, from constantly being anxious about the scrutiny and opinions of others about us, and it assures us that Allah is the One who will reward us. This shift in mindset creates within us an ultimate sense of peace and security.</p>
<p>In Surah Fussilat (41:53), Allah reminds us that <em>He</em> is the ultimate witness. That means every effort we make, every act of self-restraint, every small deed done in secret, and every moment of weakness, He sees it all. And He never overlooks a heart that turns toward Him with sincerity.</p>
<p>Surah Al-Isra (17:96) emphasizes the sufficiency of Allah’s gaze and His witness. When others misunderstand you, ignore you, or fail to appreciate you, Allah doesn’t. Allah knows and sees what others cannot comprehend, rewards more generously, and knows what you endure that no one else can even begin to imagine.</p>
<p>When you live for Allah’s pleasure, the noise quiets. You’re no longer chasing moments of approval; you’re walking steadily under the loving watch of your Creator. This is where peace begins: knowing that your worth doesn’t fluctuate with people's opinions. It rests securely with Allah.</p>

<p>“Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but He looks at your hearts and deeds.”

<p>“O Allah, make my secret better than my apparent condition, and make my apparent condition righteous. O Allah, I ask You for the good of what You give to the people, of wealth, wives, and children, not to be misguided, nor misguiding.&quot;</p>

Finding Peace in Allah’s Pleasure, Not People’s Praise

And when this worldly illusion of approval is unmasked, it presents its true form: that of jealousy, rivalry, ‘cancel culture’ and rejection. Often, people are quick to judge, criticize, and deny any good that one may have done previously. But with Allah, no matter how often we fall short, Allah is Al-Ghafur, Ar-Rahim — the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.</p>
<p>Throughout this plan, we’ve uncovered the roots of seeking validation from others, the subtle trap of <em>riya</em> (showing off), and the beauty of doing everything for Allah alone. You’ve been reminded that <strong>He sees you</strong>, even when the world scrolls past. That <strong>He hears you</strong>, even when no one else listens. That <strong>His reward lasts</strong>, while public praise fades.</p>
<p>If your heart aches to be seen, let it find peace in the One who sees the unseen. If your efforts feel invisible, know they are written with precision by the Most Appreciative. When you shift your gaze from people to your Creator, you finally find peace.</p>
